What does dance mean to you?
I know for me it is more than movement, it has so many mental and physical benefits and elements of escapism, it’s about practising something until it improves, feeling the music and that light up of the soul.
Dancing has been a huge commitment in my life, something I very much looked forward to as a child, something I felt confident with and somewhere I could be and feel completely at home. In adolescence and early adulthood it became a huge focus in my life as I knew I wanted to pursue a career in dance, and now in my thirties it still feels the same safe, rewarding, passionate place in my soul as it has always been. More so than ever I notice how much dance means to me and how much it helps me in so many ways and now rather than being on the stage, it’s about sharing that love and passion with lots of others, to bring them the joy that it has always brought me.
Sharing the love of dance with so many children and adults alike is something that I will never tire of, even though my body may say different! You can’t beat the feeling of mastering a tricky step you’ve been previously struggling with, or the feeling of the endorphin release when the music is blasting and your mind is focusing on nothing but the movement in the moment.
The more people that step out of their comfort zone and join us in our Shake classes, the better! Who knows the spark a bit of dancing could add back into your life! Meanwhile you’ll be surrounded by other ladies who want to move, exercise, keep fit, shake off stress, improve their mental health, and work on their goals. Our classes aren’t empowering just at New Year, or just before that holiday you have booked; they’re empowering all year round, a weekly reminder to add some fun and joy into your life!
Dance is performance, it’s about stepping out of your day-to-day into someone who can be free, someone who can find humour in their mistakes and not take things too seriously. It’s stepping into a version of yourself that’s determined to learn the way and pick things up over time. It’s about challenging your mind to pick up the choreography but also challenging your body physically and meanwhile not being too darn hard on yourself.
If you’re looking to try our sessions, please know it takes strength to step out of your comfort zone, it takes bravery to try something new, it takes commitment to keep showing up for yourself. All of these things are made easier by our friendly group of Shakers who will no doubt welcome you into our little world of Shakin’ it.
Although exercise, movement, weight management, and mental health are all huge factors as to why lots of people attend our dance fitness classes, it’s the sense of community that brings us together, week in, week out. We’re not just a gruelling fitness class you secretly dread, it’s a class you can’t wait to go back too, a friendship circle and a community.
Often in class I will remind us, how lucky we are to be able to move to music, how lucky we are to be able to stretch and strengthen our bodies, how lucky we are to have the ability to participate, how lucky we are to come together and dance things out.
So if you want to feel a more confident version of you, if you need an injection of fun and laughter in your weekly routine, if you want to feel empowered by a class, Shake could be the class you’ve been missing. We understand we won’t be for everyone, but with our mixture of songs in our playlists and our mixture of routine styles throughout our classes, there is bound to be an element of the class that lightens your mood, lightens the load, and takes your mind away from the everyday.
If, like me, you’re super passionate about dance, if you’re passionate about sharing the amazing benefits of dance and the way it makes you feel with others, then you can certainly take a look at joining our Shake Instructor team. You do not have to be the best technical dancer, the instructor with the most experience, the person who has only danced for a living, the most important ingredient to our Shake instructors, is their infectious love of dance, along with the passion to pass and share that on with others and ability to light up the lives of others with some empowering booty-shaking routines!
So I encourage you today to put on some music and just move, or to put “Shake dance fitness” into YouTube and follow along, or to book a session to come and try in person, OR to message us about joining the team! We would be thrilled to see you soon and hope you have enjoyed this little write up about dance and Shake and all it can bring to the lives of many!
